In this short tutorial we are going to see how to connect the Visual Studio 2012 Project to the traditional Microsoft Virtual SourceSafe database to maintain the versioning locally. Microsoft has stopped supporting the Visual SourceSafe long ago but I came across a scenario to look back the older versioning system to use with the latest Visual Studio 2012 IDE. As per MSDN Microsoft Visual SourceSafe is a file-level version control system that permits many types of organizations to work on several project versions at the same time. This capability is particularly beneficial in a software development environment, where it is used in maintaining parallel code versions. [more]
Steps:
Open Visual Studio 2012 IDE and open the project which we need to add to the Visual Source Safe. Right click on the project solution and select the option Add the solution to Source Control as shown in the screen below.
This option will open a pop up to select the Team Foundation Server to connect for versioning by default, as we know Visual Source Safe is discontinued as shown in the screen below.
Here we need to change the settings to connect to the Microsoft Visual SourceSafe database, to do that click on Tools from the menu and select the options menu as shown in the screen below.
A pop up window will open with the complete settings options for Visual Studio, navigate to the Source Control menu option and in the list select the Plug-In Selection where in the right side we can see options of the available solution control plugins of which select Visual SourceSafe as shown in the screen below.
Now go back to the Visual Studio Solution Explorer and right click the solution to select Add Solution to Source Control option and we can see the Visual SourceSafe login screen to log to the server as shown in the screen below.
