In this tutorial we are going to see how to detach the data disk which we attached to a Virtual Machine in Windows Azure environment in our previous article (How to attach an Empty Disk in Windows Azure Virtual Machine – #Meet Azure Edition). Attaching the data disk and configuring over the Virtual Machine is something that is very much necessary to deploy the application data that is required to be maintained separately apart from the Operating System Data. Where as the data disk can be detached can can be attached to any virtual machines with ease with the options provided in the Windows Azure Management Portal.
Detaching an earlier attached data disk in Virtual machine can be done by logging in to the Windows Azure Management Portal. Let us see how we can detach the data disk which we attached to the MilesVM virtual machine in our previous article. To start with open Windows Azure Management Studio and provide your valid credentials to navigate to the Virtual Machines section in the portal as shown in the screen below. [more]
Navigate to the Dashboard of the MilesVM Virtual Machine by clicking on the Name and we can see the detailed view of the Virtual Machine with the number of disks attached and few other details as shown in the screen below.
Now to detach the disk first let us select the Detach Disk button available at the bottom ribbon viewer where can select the Data disk which we are going to detach as shown in the screen below.
Clicking on the Detach Disk will popup a windows which has the list of available data disks select the appropriate one which is attached to the MilesVM virtual machine and Click on Proceed as shown in the screen below.
Clicking on Proceed with start detaching the Data Disk from the virtual machine and we can see the status as shown in the screen below.
Once the process is completed we can see only the OSdisk attached to the Virtual Machine and the Data disk is removed temporarily from the machine but still will be available on the storage as shown in the screen below.
Hope this tutorial will be useful to the readers, see you all in the next tutorial until then Happy Programming!!!
