Microsoft recently released the Windows Phone 8 SDK and it was announced the existing devices will not be supported with the newer version. System Requirement:
Requires to be installed in Windows 8 or higher version and it should have Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 7 SDK pre installed.
Where to download the SDK?
So if you development environment is already having the Windows Phone 7.1 and Windows Phone 8 SDK you are well set to go and download the update. Else you need to first install the SDKs in your local machine and then start the Windows Phone 7.8 update as it requires the machine to have the other SDKs in place before running this updated SDK.
