SQL Server 2012 Developer Training Kit

Recently after the SQL Server 2012 release Microsoft team has shipped the much enhanced and updated training kit for the SQL Server 2012 development. It includes a huge list of training materials to be covered with presentations and labs on BI Symatic Model, SQL, Integration Services, Power View.

Denali Series – Downloading and Installing Denali CTP3 in Win Server 2008 R2

Introduction:

In this article we are going to see how to download and install Microsoft SQL Server Codename “DENALI” CTP3 in Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition step by step.

Overview:

In our earlier article on the release of SQL Server Code name Denali CTP3 we have seen the features of the same. In this article we will see how to proceed with downloading the installer and setting up the development environment for Denali CTP3 step by step.

Steps:

We have 2 versions that can be downloaded and used as per our requirement

Option 1 - Denali CTP3 Evaluation

Option 2 - Denali CTP3 Express

We can download the installer here - Download SQL Server Denali CTP3 Express

Here in this step by step process we are going to download and install the Evaluation version, Once we go to the download page we can see the download link Download CTP3 as shown in the screen below.

Clicking on the Download CTP3 link will navigate to download the version(32 bit or 64 bit). Since we are going to install it on to the Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise we are going to select the 64 Bit version as shown in the screen below.

Clicking on Download 64 button will navigate to a new page where the download starts using the Internet Download Manager as shown in the screen below.

Once the download is completed we can see 4 files downloaded as shown in the screen below.

Now double click on the SQLFULL_x64_ENU_Install application file to extract the required files for installation. It will take bit time to extract all the files to the same location as shown in the screen below.

Once the extraction is over, refresh the folder and we can see a new folder created SQLFULL_x64_ENU as shown in the screen below.

Now navigate to the folder and we can see a list of files as shown in the screen below. Point to Setup file and right-click on the file and select Run as administrator

Now the installation process will be started and we can see the status message as shown in the screen below.

Now the new window will be opened with the different steps to carry out our installation and some links providing help for our installation steps as shown in the screen below. We can now select the Hardware and Software Requirement to check the necessary things are available for our installation. Else we can navigate to the link http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506(v=sql.110).aspx and check for the same.

Now in the left menu navigate to Installation and we can see the option New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation option as shown in the screen below. Click on that option to proceed further.

Now we can see some Setup Support Rules will be running background to check if required process available for installation. Once its completed we can see the high level result of how many rules failed or skipped as shown in the screen below.

To check in detail of the Passed results we need to click on the Show details button and we can see the complete list of rules ran and the result as well as shown in the screen below.

Now click on OK button and we can see a new window with evaluation options for the licenses. Select Evaluation license or Express license as per our requirement. Since in this article we are going to evaluate the product installation we are going to select Evaluation from the list and click on Next button as shown in the screen below.

Clicking on Next button will navigate to the Terms and conditions of the installation. Selec the check box as shown in the screen below and click on Next button

Now we can see the list of updates available to be downloaded and installed, as its mentioned in the screen it first installs the Setup Update(30MB) remaining will be downloaded later and installed. Click on Next to proceed further after selecting the updates as shown in the screen below.

We can now see the Setup Update gets downloaded and status of the steps as well as shown in the screen below. Once the download is completed click on Install to proceed further.

Now we can see new set of Setup Support Rules running and providing a result as shown in the screen below. We can see 2 warnings since the server is domain controlled it shows the warning. Just ignore it and we can proceed further by clicking on Next button as shown in the screen below.

Now we need to selec the type of installation which we need to proceed. Select SQL Server Feature Installation and click on Next as shown in the screen below.

Now we can see the list of Features that need to be installed, we have an option at the bottom of the list as Select All to select the complete list. Also we can share the features installed directory customized by selecting the folder as shown in the screen below. Click on Next button to proceed further.

Now we can see some set of Installation Rules running and get the result as shown in the screen below. Click on Next to proceed further.

Now we need to provide our instance Name as per our wish. Here we have provided with DENALICTP as the instance name and select the install root folder and click on Next button as shown in the screen below.

Now we can see the summary of the Disk Space available in the server and the required space for the installation of Denali CTP3 as shown in the screen below. Click on Next to proceed further.

Now we can see the list of services and the Startup type of each service (Manual or Automatic) based on our selection we can make it as per our requirement as shown in the screen below. Click on Next to proceed further.

Now Server configuration screen comes up, here as per our requirement we can use Windows Authentication or the Mixed Authentication modes and provide valid Password. At the bottom we can see a button Add Current User, click on that button to add the current user to the list as shown in the screen below. Click on Next to proceed further.

Now we can see the Error Reporting option, if we need to report the error to Microsoft then we can initiate it by using the Check box enabled as shown in the screen below. Click on Next to proceed further.

Now Configuration Rules will be triggered and provide the results as shown in the screen below. Click on Next to proceed further.

Now we can see the summary of the list of service and applications that are going to be installed listed as shown in the screen below. Click on INSTALL to proceed further and start the installation.

Now we can see the installation is started and the installer will do step by step process of installing all the necessary components as shown in the screen below.

Once the installation is completed we can see the result and the status as shown in the screen below. Click on Close to complete the process.

No go to programs and navigate to Microsoft SQL Server Denali CTP3 and select the SQL Server Management Studio(SSMS) as shown in the screen below.

We can see the Denali CTP3 studio starts loading as shown in the screen below.

Once its loaded we are now good with the SSMS and start using for our development process as shown in the screen below.

Codename “Juneau” – SQL Server Developer Tools CTP3

Microsoft has released the SQL Server Developer Tools CTP3 with CodeName JUNEAU. It provides developers to do all the Database Design work for any SQL Server Database On and Off Premise with this Integrated tool with Visual Studio 2010.

Using this integrated tool with the Visual Studio 2010 Microsoft provides features like database development, specifically; code navigation, IntelliSense, language support that parallels what is available for C# and VB, platform-specific validation, debugging and declarative editing in the TSQL Editor, as well as a visual Table Designer for both database projects and online database instances.

Download Microsoft SQL Server Code Name “Denali” Express CTP3

SQL Server Code Name “Denali” Express CTP3 is a free edition of SQL Server that is ideal for learning, developing and powering desktop, web and small server applications, and for redistribution by ISVs.

New in this release is SQL Server Express LocalDB. LocalDB is a lightweight version of Express that has all of its programmability features, yet runs in user mode and has a fast, zero-configuration installation and a short list of pre-requisites. To try LocalDB, simply check the box during the installation process of either SQL Server Express option.
