In this tutorial we are going to see how to upgrade your existing version of the Windows Phone Application project (Preferably Windows Phone 7.1) to the latest Windows Phone 8 version. Upgrading the existing application project to the latest version is a simple task by using Visual Studio 2012 IDE and upgrade with simple clicks, before upgrading to the latest version try to take a backup copy of the complete project as in cases we might need to target both the platforms. Once we start the upgrade process we will not have the older copy maintained as the complete project will be upgraded to the latest version. [more]
We know the version, details and assembly are stored locally and unique to the project so to upgrade from WP 7.1 to WP 8.0 the project files should be altered so that the configurations are easily changed. So keep the complete solution files and mainly the WMAppManifest.xml file in read-write mode as the latest version configurations will be maintained in to this file. Let us see how we can upgrade the existing version of the project to the latest WP 8.0 version in simple steps. We have different methods to do that, here in this tutorial we will see one of them.
Open Visual Studio 2012 IDE and click on Open –> Existing Project and navigate to the solution folder where we have the older version project which might be developed in Visual Studio 2010 IDE and targeting WP 7.1 version as shown in the screen below.
Now the application is targeting the Windows Phone 7.1 version and we want to upgrade the application project to Windows Phone 8 to use some of the latest SDK features. Simple right click on the Solution Explorer and there is an option called Upgrade to Windows Phone 8.0 as shown in the screen below.
Clicking on Upgrade to Windows Phone 8.0 will show a pop up window with a final confirmation and the information to take the backup of the existing version before it upgrades as shown in the screen below.
Clicking on Yes will start upgrading your application to the Windows Phone 8.0 version and all the necessary files and folder will be upgraded and changed that are required to run with Windows Phone 8.0 OS. Once upgraded look into the supporting projects and the references that are used to also be upgraded to the Windows Phone 8.0 version as cross version reference is not possible.
